Scientific Collaborations

At LIFE we strive to achieve the highest standards in scientific and technological excellence. Key to this goal is the strategic application of leading sources of data, knowledge and technologies. From a scientific perspective, this entails the use of human specific data derived from highly reliable clinical and molecular repositories. Our long term strategic affiliation agreement with the world-renowned M.D. Anderson cancer center is but one example of how we position ourselves to remain at the forefront of advancements in this domain.

In terms of in silico discovery technologies, we actively collaborate with established leaders in fields such as text and data mining, to advance these technologies into novel areas of application. These advancements are then integrated within our own in silico discovery environment, where they synergize with other proprietary developments.  The result: A state-of-the-art in silico-driven discovery approach, strategically geared to maximizing the clinical impact of patient, molecular and business information.

The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Houston, Texas.

The M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, one of the world's preeminent centers for cancer research, education and prevention, providing care for more than 700,000 cancer patients since 1944 and 74,000 in the last year alone. In February 2008, LIFE and the M.D. Anderson cancer center entered into a long-term Strategic Affiliation Agreement (SAA). Under the terms of this agreement we pursue joint research projects aimed at maximizing the clinical and therapeutic impact of studies performed at the center. The agreement furthermore provides a mode for initiating clinical and pre-clinical studies aimed at validating in silico discoveries made by LIFE’s research scientists. Under the terms of this agreement, Life Biosystems can exclusively license M. D. Anderson’s rights in certain discoveries from these joint research projects.

Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI)

The Department of Bioinformatics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI) is renowned in the field of text mining and information extraction in the life sciences. Excellence in the field of biological named entity recognition has been independently established through successful participation in the two BioCreative text-mining competitions and through several industrial collaboration projects in the area of semantic text analysis and information extraction. LIFE is working together with SCAI to advance the application of text-mining in the field of therapeutic system modelling and to improve our understanding of the biological promiscuity and physiological effects of small molecule drugs.
