Latest News23-04-08 14:00 LIFE Biosystems AG Establishes Strategic Affiliation with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
Basel, Switzerland; Houston, Texas — April 23, 2008 — LIFE Biosystems AG announced today that it has entered into a ten year strategic research agreement with The University of Texas, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center to pursue joint research projects in the area of molecular medicine for the discovery, validation and development of drug markers, drug targets, combinatorial treatments, alternative medical uses, adverse drug reactions or modes of action of drugs. As part of the Agreement, LIFE Biosystems shall receive exclusive rights to commercialize intellectual property discovered in certain joint research projects.
Under the terms of this agreement the parties will also work together to develop in-silico models to evaluate combinatorial therapy treatments for cancer patients aimed at maximizing the clinical and therapeutic impact of studies performed at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Such projects are intended to capitalize on the synergy created by combining data from world class cancer research programs with the innovative approach to discovery afforded by LIFE’s in silico Discovery. Additionally, the agreement provides a mechanism for initiating clinical and pre-clinical studies aimed at validating in silico discoveries made by LIFE’s research scientists. The key areas of joint investigation include: the rational prediction of combinatorial therapies to address the high non-responder rates associated with all cancer therapies; the search for patient validated targets and theranostics and the analysis of drug mode of action and the identification of alternative clinical use cases and contraindications.
“We are excited by this important development in our relationship with the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center," said Stephan Brock, Ph.D., CEO of LIFE Biosystems. "We have developed a novel approach to in silico discovery and this agreement with one of the world's premier cancer centers provides a unique opportunity to collaborate to improve patient treatment. Through this relationship, we will work with M.D. Anderson researchers to optimize clinical trial design and predict the outcome of combinatorial therapies."
“We will launch the first joint study under this agreement in the near future and look forward to the possibility of additional collaboration that combines our faculty’s strengths and LIFE Biosystems’ expertise and experience in in silico discovery,” said Maurie Markman, M.D., Vice President Clinical Research of M. D. Anderson. LIFE Biosystems is an in silico discovery company focusing on the unmet therapeutic needs of clinical oncology. Working together with the biopharmaceutical industry and comprehensive cancer centers, we strive to address the key issues facing clinical oncology research and therapeutic development today. As expert practitioners of in silico discovery in molecular medicine, our goal is to transform patient information and molecular data into a new level of clinical discovery, intellectual property and ultimately, patient benefit.
